Labs and lab requirements
Review the lab panels your network offers clients, add a new one, link follow-on products — and know that the lab requirement itself is set on Protocols.

This is the catalog of lab panels your network makes available to its clients — what each one tests, who it is for, what it costs, and which follow-on products it can lead to.
The rule that makes a lab required is not on this page. It lives on /protocols, inside each protocol's Require Labs panel — that is where you choose the Approved Labs, set the Lab recency window (days), and optionally switch to Require labs by markers. This page only decides which panels exist.
Questions people ask about this page
Why are there two columns both called "Lab"?
The first is the panel name (for example Quest Comprehensive TRT Panel (Male)). The fourth is the reference lab that runs it (Quest, Labcorp, BioReference, CRL, USSL). Sort by either — they sort independently.
Where do I switch a lab on for patients?
You cannot. A provider network has no per-lab activation control and no storefront toggle. The linked client picks which approved labs its patients can order, sets the patient price, and controls visibility on its own Labs page.
What is the difference between Price and Cost?
Price is the panel's default price on the catalog row. Cost is what the lab bills. Neither is what a patient pays — the client sets that.
What does the banner about a payment method mean?
The headline reads Please update your account payment method to enable labs. with a Set up payment method button. GEN Health charges a per-order lab platform fee, and without a card on file paid lab orders are held instead of being sent to the lab. Fix it on Settings → Account and billing.
What are "Linked products"?
The catalog items a patient can be offered after a result comes back — for example a treatment that follows a hormone panel. Click Linked products on the row to set them. A client-specific override beats the network link.
The lab I want does not exist. Can I create it?
Yes, with Create Lab. Pick the reference lab, then either use a panel the lab already publishes or build a new one from markers. A newly built panel goes to the vendor for approval and shows Pending approval until they respond — it cannot be activated before then.
Why do the rows say "No categories"?
No network category has been attached to that panel. Categories are optional here, but they drive the All categories filter and make a large catalog navigable. Add them when you create or edit the lab.
Can a Provider use this page?
Yes, read-only. Providers and Provider Delegates see the same table without Create Lab, without the Linked products column, and without the payment banner.
Where to find it
Left menu → Labs. Direct link: /labs. Visible to: Provider Network Admin (full), Provider and Provider Delegate (read-only). Page heading Labs, subtitle Review lab panels your provider network offers to clients. No tabs — /labs is the only link.

How to add a lab panel
The wizard adapts to the reference lab you pick. For the Junction-backed labs — BioReference, CRL, Labcorp, Quest, USSL — it runs the full six-step flow below.
Start the wizard
Click Create Lab. Step one is Which lab is this panel for? — The rest of the setup only asks what applies to that lab. Cards list the reference labs available to your network — on staging that is BioReference, CRL, Labcorp, Quest, and USSL.
Pick the reference lab
Click the lab that will actually run the panel. This choice decides which panels and markers you can pick from next, so get it right.
Choose the panel source
Step Choose panel source — Use a panel the lab already publishes, or create a new panel by selecting markers. Two cards: Use an existing panel (Choose a panel that already exists in the lab's catalog.) and Create a new panel from markers (Select markers and create a panel for review.). Prefer an existing panel — it needs no approval.
Choose the collection method
Step Choose collection method — Choose how this lab is collected: test kit, walk-in, at-home phlebotomy, or on-site collection. The four cards are Test Kit (Ship a collection kit to the patient.), Walk-In Test (Patient visits a supported lab location.), At-Home Phlebotomy (A phlebotomist collects the sample at the patient address.), and On-Site Collection (Staff collects the sample on site and marks the draw complete.). Test Kit is unavailable when you are building a new panel from markers.
Select the panel or the markers
Importing: step Select panel — Search panels by panel name or lab test ID. Building: step Select markers — Search markers or start from common marker searches. The common searches offered are Glucose, Hemoglobin A1c, Total Cholesterol, TSH, Vitamin D, and ALT. Saving with none selected is refused.
Review the catalog entry
Step Review lab product — Set the client-facing price, categories, and final catalog summary. Set the name, price, categories, target audience, and any patient instructions here.
Submit and watch approval
Toast: Lab submitted to Junction for a new panel, or Lab created successfully for a straightforward add. The final step is Lab submitted — Track Junction approval before activating this lab. The row's Status stays Pending approval until the vendor responds.
How to link follow-on products to a lab
Open the dialog
Click Linked products in the row. The dialog is titled Linked products — {lab name}. While it loads it reads Loading linked products...
Read which layer you are editing
If the note says Using the Super Admin default. Saving creates a network-specific override. you are about to fork from the platform default. If it says This network overrides the default follow-on products for this lab. you already have your own list.
Pick the products
Select the network or root-catalog items a patient may be offered after this lab returns results.
Save
Click Save. Toast: Linked products updated. Reset to default appears only once an override exists and drops you back to the platform list.
Remember the precedence
A client-specific link beats your network link. If a client is seeing different follow-ons than you configured, look at the client's own lab links.
How to make a lab required for a protocol
Leave this page
Go to Protocols in the left menu, or /protocols.
Open the protocol
Either click the Labs? cell in the row (aria label Configure lab requirements for {name}) or use the row menu ... → Edit product.
Turn on Require Labs
On the Basics tab, switch on Require Labs — Patients must complete recent results from a supported lab product before this item can be ordered.
Choose which labs count
In Approved Labs, search with Search labs... and select the panels from this catalog that satisfy the requirement. Only the labs you tick will satisfy it.
Set the recency window
Fill Lab recency window (days). An older qualifying result no longer counts and the patient is asked to order or upload again.
Or require markers instead of panels
Switch to Require labs by markers and pick from Required markers (Search markers...). Any panel containing those markers then satisfies the requirement, which is more forgiving than an explicit list.
Save the protocol
The Labs? column on /protocols flips to Yes.
What a required lab actually blocks
Turning a lab requirement on holds the parent order until the requirement is satisfied. The patient is asked Have you had labs done in the last {recency}? with the choices Yes, I have recent results and No, I need to order labs, plus a Results already on your chart card when a qualifying result already exists. Until it clears, no clinical review happens and no prescription can be written for that order.
| Requirement state | What the patient sees | Who has to move |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing chosen yet | The lab requirement gate on the order. | Patient — answer the question. |
| Intends to buy, not paid | Roadmap step Labs needed. | Patient — finish lab checkout. |
| Lab ordered and running | Labs ordered — Your lab is ordered. Check your lab order for collection details — results reach your care team automatically. | Nobody. Do not re-prompt the patient. |
| Patient uploaded a result | Results under review — Your care team is checking the result you uploaded. Nothing is needed from you right now. | The client's admin or staff — accept or decline the upload. |
| Requirement met | Reviewed — Your care team accepted your results. | Nobody. The order moves on. |
Statuses you will see here
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending approval | A panel you built is waiting for the vendor. Blocks activation. | Wait for the vendor. Nothing on your side unblocks it. |
| Ready to activate | Vendor approval granted; the lab is not switched on yet. | The client activates it in its own catalog — a provider network has no activation control. |
| Active | Live and orderable. | Nothing. |
| Unavailable | The vendor-side lab is in an unusable state. Blocks activation. | Raise it with GEN Health support — it is not fixable from this page. |
| Inactive | A non-vendor lab that is switched off. | Edit the lab and set Status to Active. |
| No categories | Category cell — no network category attached. | Optional, but add one so the category filter is useful. |
- | The column has no value for that lab. | Edit the lab if the field matters. |
What can go wrong
| What you see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No enabled lab integrations — A lab integration must be available to this network and active before labs can be shown to clients. | No lab connector is switched on for your network. | Go to Integrations → Labs and switch on the connector named in your agreement. If the section is empty, GEN Health has not made one available yet. |
| No labs found — Try adjusting your filters. | Filters exclude everything. | Click Clear all. |
| Lab orders are being held rather than sent | No platform billing card on file, so the per-order lab platform fee cannot be charged. | Click Set up payment method in the banner, or fix it on Settings → Account and billing. |
| You cannot find an activation toggle | There is not one. A provider network never activates a lab for patients. | Ask the client to activate it, price it, and make it visible in its own catalog. |
| A protocol still says patients need labs after you added the panel | The panel is not in that protocol's Approved Labs list. | Open the protocol and tick it. Existing in the catalog is not the same as satisfying a requirement. |
| Old results stopped counting | The Lab recency window (days) on the protocol has elapsed. | Widen the window on the protocol if the clinical team agrees, or let the patient re-order. |
| A new panel never leaves Pending approval | The vendor has not approved the marker set. | Use Use an existing panel instead — published panels skip approval entirely. |
| A client sees different follow-on products than you set | A client-specific lab link overrides the network link. | Check the client's own configuration; your network link is the fallback, not the rule. |
| You expected to duplicate a lab or send one to a patient | Those controls are Client-only. A provider network cannot duplicate a lab or push one to a patient. | Ask the client to do it from its Labs page. |
