Formulary and medication pairings
What the Formulary page is, what has to be true before it appears in your menu, and how a product gets paired to a medication.
/formulary lists the medications your connected pharmacies stock, what each one costs you, and which of your products it is paired to — and it only exists once a pharmacy integration is switched on.
Read this first. If Formulary is not in your left menu, you do not have this page yet. Typing /formulary returns "Page not found — The page you're looking for doesn't exist or you don't have access." That is the expected result, not a fault. Before you have a pharmacy below tells you exactly what unlocks it.
Questions people ask about this page
Why is Formulary missing from my left menu?
The menu item and the route are both removed until your client has an active OnlyScripts pharmacy integration. Go to Integrations, find the Pharmacies section, and complete Connect OnlyScripts account. Review-only clients never get this page at all, whatever their pharmacy setup.
I just connected the pharmacy and Formulary still is not there.
The answer to "does this client have a pharmacy?" is cached in your browser for up to 24 hours and rechecked in the background. Reload the page. If it still does not appear, sign out and back in, or open the app in a private window — that starts with an empty cache and asks the question fresh.
What is a pairing, in one sentence?
A pairing tells the provider which pharmacy medications you would prefer them to use for a given product. It is a preference list, not an automatic substitution: the provider still chooses at prescribing time, and a star marks the provider network's own default.
Can I pair a product my own brand created?
No. Only products that came from a provider-network protocol can be paired. A direct-sale client product shows Client-owned in the Paired formulary cell, and the product editor says "Direct-sale client products do not use provider-network formulary mapping."
Do I set the medication price here?
The Price, Shipping, and Total columns are what the pharmacy charges you. A Client Admin can type an override in Price. What the patient pays is a different number entirely — the Price field on the product, set on Products.
Can Client Staff change pairings?
No. Staff see the page read-only: the pairing controls become badges, the price is plain text, and there is no hide or bulk action. Their subtitle says so — "Contact a client admin to change pairings." Both roles can use Export CSV.
Before you have a pharmacy
Three things must all be true before Formulary appears:
- Your client is not on the Review only model. Review-only clients have no Products, Formulary, Labs, Orders, Prescriptions, Messages, or Billing.
- Your client — or your parent client, if you are an affiliated child brand — has a pharmacy integration whose adapter is OnlyScripts, and its status is Active. Anything Incomplete, Disabled, or Archived does not count.
- Your browser has re-asked the question since that happened. The answer is cached for 24 hours.
How to tell which one is missing
| Check | What you should see | If you do not |
|---|---|---|
| Left menu | A Formulary item between Messages and Visits. | Nothing below is available yet. |
| Integrations → Pharmacies | At least one pharmacy row with the status Active. | If you see "No pharmacies enabled for this account." and Finish OnlyScripts setup, start at Integrations and pharmacy. |
| Products table | A Paired formulary column, and a Formulary filter. | Both are hidden by the same gate. |
| A product editor | A Prescribing tab with a pairing count badge. | Same gate again. |
You do not need the Formulary page to sell a non-prescription product. You do need it before a prescription product can reach a pharmacy — an unpaired prescription product produces an order that stops without an error message.
Where to find it
Left menu → Formulary. Direct link: /formulary. Visible to: Client Admin (can edit) and Client Staff (read-only). One page, no tabs, no sub-routes.
Heading Formulary. Client Admin subtitle: "Manage catalog pairings with medications from enabled pharmacies." Client Staff subtitle: "Review medications from enabled pharmacies and how they pair with catalog products. Contact a client admin to change pairings."
This page only exists once a pharmacy is connected, so nothing below appears on a brand that has not finished Integrations and pharmacy. To check where you stand, look for Formulary between Messages and Visits in the left menu.
What is on this page
| What you see | What it does |
|---|---|
Search medications or SKU... | Searches the medication name and its SKU. |
| A row of pharmacy pills | One pill per connected pharmacy, each with a count — for example Vios 293. Click one to narrow the list to that pharmacy. |
| All forms | Filter by dose form (capsule, cream, supplies, and so on), plus No form. |
| Price range | Under $50, $50-$100, $100-$200, $200+, No price. |
| Shipping | Paid shipping, Free shipping, Shipping info, No shipping. |
| Package and Strength | Filter by pack size and strength. |
| All Pairings | Paired or Unpaired. This is how you find the work still to do. |
| Directions and All Networks | Two more filters that only appear when your data needs them — directions overrides, and more than one provider network. |
| Show hidden ({n}) | Appears once you have hidden at least one medication. Client Admin only. |
| Export CSV | Downloads the filtered list. Both roles. |
| Columns, left to right | Medication · Pharmacy · Strength · Form · Package · Price · Shipping · Total · Paired products. A Client Admin also gets a select box on each row and a hide button (Hide {medication}) at the end. |
| The count above the table | Reads "514 of 514" — how many rows your filters are showing out of the whole catalogue. |
| An em dash in a price cell | The pharmacy has published no price for that item. |
There is no separate "Formulary mapping" panel, whatever older documentation says. The page is a single table. Pairing happens in the Paired products cell here, or in the Paired formulary cell on Products.
How to pair a product to a medication
There are two routes to the same result. Start from the product when you are setting one product up; start from the medication when you are working through a new pharmacy catalogue.
From the product
Open the catalogue
In the left menu, click Products.
Find the pairing cell
In the Paired formulary column, click the pill on the product's row. It reads Needs pairing when the product can be paired but is not.
Choose the medications
A sheet opens, headed Paired formulary for {product}. Tick every pharmacy medication the provider should consider for this product. The tooltip explains the intent: "Select pharmacy medications the provider network should consider as this client's preferred options. A star identifies a provider-network default."
Check the pill
The cell now reads 1 medication or {n} medications.
From the medication
Open the Formulary page
In the left menu, click Formulary.
Show only unpaired rows
Set the All Pairings filter to Unpaired. That is your to-do list.
Read the cost first
Note Price, Shipping, and Total — that is what the pharmacy charges you. You need it before you set the patient price on Products.
Pair it
In the Paired products cell — the last column — tick the products this medication should serve. The cell changes from No pairings to Paired.
Hide what you will never use
Use the hide button at the end of the row (Hide {medication}) to take a medication out of your working list. Show hidden ({n}) brings them back.
Pair several products at once
Turn on Bulk
On Products, click Bulk and tick the products you want.
Open the bulk sheet
Click Pair Formulary in the bulk bar. The sheet is titled Pair formulary ({n} products).
Pick the medications
Tick the medications to apply to all of the selected products, then close the sheet.
Statuses you will see here
| Status | Where | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paired | Formulary, Paired products | This medication is on at least one product's preferred list. | Nothing. |
| No pairings (also written Not paired) | Formulary, Paired products | Nothing points at this medication. | Pair it, or hide it. |
| Unavailable | Formulary | The pharmacy no longer offers it. | Pair the product to something else. |
| Inactive pharmacy | Formulary | The pharmacy this medication comes from is switched off. | Re-enable it on Integrations, or repair the product elsewhere. |
| Hidden medication | Formulary | You hid this row. | Click Show hidden to bring it back. |
| Needs pairing | Products, Paired formulary | The product can be paired and has no pairings. This is the one that blocks a launch. | Click the pill and pick a medication. |
| {n} medications | Products | Paired, with that many options on the list. | Nothing. |
| No pharmacy | Products | No active formulary pharmacy exists for this client. | Integrations and pharmacy. |
| No provider network | Products | The product is not tied to a network, so it cannot be paired. | Use the row menu to change the product's source, or leave it. |
| Client-owned | Products | A direct-sale product of your own. Pairing does not apply. | Nothing. |
| No network protocols | Products | A package with no network protocol inside it. | Pair the products inside the package instead. |
| Not eligible / No pairings | Products | Fallback wording when none of the above applies. | Open the pill to see what the product is missing. |
| Partial state coverage | Products filter and tooltip | "Paired pharmacies do not cover all 50 states. Missing: {ST, ST}. Patients in these states will be routed to another available pharmacy; the provider chooses at prescribing time." | Pair an additional pharmacy if you want to control the routing. |
What can go wrong
| What you see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
"Page not found — The page you're looking for doesn't exist or you don't have access." at /formulary. | No active OnlyScripts pharmacy integration for this client, so the route is removed from the app entirely. | Integrations and pharmacy. This is the single most common reason. |
| The pharmacy is connected, the menu item is still missing. | The 24-hour visibility cache in your browser has not been refreshed. | Reload. If that fails, sign out and in again, or open a private window. |
| "No formulary medications returned for enabled pharmacies." | The pharmacy connected fine but has published no catalogue to this client yet. | Ask your provider network or OnlyScripts contact to enable the medications for your account. |
| "No medications match your current filters." | A filter is on — usually the pharmacy pills or All Pairings. | Clear the filters and search again. |
| "Unable to load formulary." | The pharmacy lookup failed. | Reload. If it persists, raise a ticket from Support addressed to OnlyScripts, not to GEN Health. |
| An order for a prescription product never reaches the pharmacy. | The product has no pairing. The order stops without showing an error. | On Products, set the Formulary filter to Unpaired and clear every row before you go live. |
| The pairing checkboxes are greyed out. | You are signed in as Client Staff. | Ask a Client Admin. Staff can still export the list. |
| You cannot find a "stale pairing" filter. | There is not one. The filters are Paired and Unpaired only. | Use Unavailable and Inactive pharmacy in the pairing cell to spot broken ones. |
